These crochet candle holders and the matching flower holder are perfect for any mantel, dining room table or sideboard.
Materials for 1 Flower Holder and 2 Candle Holders: Lily Double Quick, Art. 50, in Black: 2 skeins. No. 3 steel crochet hook. 4 large marbles and 8 small marbles.
Candle Holder Size: 3 3/4 x 2 inches
Base: Repeat thru Rnd 3. 2 sc in next sc, sl st in next sc.
Cup: Ch 1, turn, sc in back lp of 22 sc around; join.
Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc at base of each sc around; join to back lp of 1st sc.
Rnd 3: Ch 1, sc in same st, sc in back lp of each sc around; join thru both lps of 1st sc. Repeat Rnds 2 & 3 three times and Rnd 2 again (5 rnds of long sc made).
Edge: (Ch 3, sl st in next sc) repeated around; join and fasten off.
Base Border: Attach to remaining lp of 1 sc on edge of Base, ch 1, sc in same st, sc in each st around (22 sc); join.
Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc at base of same sc, * (2 sc at base of next sc, sc at base of next 2 sc) * 6 times, 2 sc at base of next sc, sc at base of next sc, 2 sc at base of next sc; join to back lp of 1st sc (30 long sc).
Rnd 3: Ch 1, sc in back lp of each sc around; join.
Rnd 4: Ch 1, sc at base of same sc, repeat from * to * in Rnd 2 around (40 sc); join. Repeat Rnd 3.
Rnd 6: Like Rnd 2 but inc in every 4th sc (50 sc); join. Repeat Rnd 3.
Rnd 8: Like Rnd 2 but inc in every 5th sc (60 sc); join.
Rnd 9: Repeat Edge on Flower Holder (20 lps).
Ball Foot: Ch 2, 6 sc in 2d ch from hook.
Rnd 2: Working in back lp only, 2 sc in each sc around (12 sc).
Rnd 3: (Sc in next 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc) 3 times.
Rnd 4: Sc in next 28 sc. Insert a small marble. (Sc in next 2 sc worked off as 1 sc) 5 times; (sk 1 sc, sl st in next sc) 5 times. Fasten off. Make 4. Sew to underside of Base Border, evenly spaced.
Make a 2nd Candle Holder
Block Flower Holder over bottom of a quart jar. Wrap base of a candle in waxed paper, insert in Candlestick cup, turn upside down in a jar or bottle, block base flat and leave until dry.
Starching instructions: For doilies dissolve 2 heaping tablespoons (3 for other pieces), of Argo Gloss Starch in 1/2 cup cold water, add to 1 quart warm water, heat and boil briskly for several minutes, stirring constantly. Add 1 cup cold water and cool until comfortable to handle. Add enough liquid Bluing to make starch a deep blue. Dip crochet in starch, squeezing the starch thru it thoroughly. Remove, squeeze out excess starch, roll in paper towels and leave for an hour or two. Then rub off any excess starch with paper towel, stretch on waxed paper and block as given in individual instructions.
